After Mustafa Bilgi’s death as a result of a bomb attack, Sedat Yenigün was appointed as the chairman. He established reading groups and a book club within the MTTB and brought together the books of thinkers such as Seyyid Kutup, Mevdudi, Abdülkadir Udeh, Ali Shariati, Muhammed Hamidullah, Malik bin Nebi, who are well known to the Islamic world. He organized the press and culture works in MTTB and wrote articles followed by the youth in the journal Milli Genclik. He took active roles in the establishment and work of Istanbul Cultural Centers.

He was among the founders of the monthly Islamic Movement magazine, which started its publication life in 1977. Sedat Yenigün, who wrote articles in the magazine, which continued its publication life for three years, also wrote columns in the magazines of Fikir, Tevhid and Milli Gazete. Since Sedat Yenigün was a teacher in a public school, he wrote articles under the pen name Mengüç Yenigün.

After graduating from the Faculty of Literature at Istanbul University, he worked as an oratory teacher at Darüşşafaka High School, and as a literature teacher and administrator at Zeytinburnu İhsan Mermerci High School. When he was a teacher, he did not break away from the youth movements and gave seminars and conferences at the headquarters of MTTB in Istanbul Cağaloğlu. The speech he made in the “Islamic Resurrection Night” program held at Tepebaşı Casino in December 1977 was remembered for many years.

Sedat Yenigün, who is interested in tradesmen as well as young people, organized “Unity” conversations for tradesmen. He stayed away from the mystical debates of those days by keeping his ties with Sufi circles such as İskenderpaşa and İsmailağa.

Martyrdom:

Sedat Yenigün was killed by unidentified people in a barber shop on Fatih Akşemseddin street towards the evening of Saturday, July 5, 1980. The heinous murder was reported by some newspapers as “A communist teacher was killed”. The barber, the only witness of the incident, disappeared two days after his first statement and was later taken abroad. The murderers of Sedat Yenigün have still not been found and the murder went down in history as unsolved.

Sedat left the editorial board meeting of the Islamic Movement magazine, went to the barber shop on Fatih Akşemseddin street, and after a while, the barber shop turned into a battlefield. The dark forces that followed Sadat poured their bullets into his body. Sadat was martyred. The news of the murder of a communist teacher was spread around. The most important eyewitness, the barber, disappeared within 1-2 days. It was later heard that he was sent abroad. Then came the September 12 coup. No serious statement was made about the identity of the murderers. Some of the close friends of the martyr, who were pursuing the file, were warned by some regime officials not to deal with the file.

A book titled “Notes of a Martyr – Sedat Yenigün (1950-1980)” was published about Sedat Yenigün in 1998. Its name was given to a street in the Körfez district of Kocaeli: “Sedat Yenigün Caddesi”.
